A Few Things To Know About Spring Lawn Care

No matter where you live in the country, spring is a good time to spruce up your lawn. Here's what you need to know about spring lawn care.

De-thatch

De-thatching is the process of removing dead grass. Thatch is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that can build up over time. Too much thatch can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots of your grass, leading to an unhealthy lawn. De-thatching can be done with a special rake or machine and is an important part of spring lawn care.

Aerate

Aeration is the process of making small holes in your lawn to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots of your grass. Aeration can be done with a special machine or by hand. It is a good idea to aerate your lawn in the spring or fall.

Weed control

Weeds can be a nuisance in any lawn, but there are a few things you can do to help control them. First, make sure to mow your lawn regularly and at the proper height. This will help prevent weeds from taking over. Second, use a herbicide to kill any existing weeds. Be sure to follow the directions on the herbicide to avoid harming your grass. Finally, consider using a weed barrier to prevent new weeds from growing.

Pest control

There are a few common pests that can damage your lawn, including grubs, moles, and voles. Grubs are the larvae of beetles, and they feed on the roots of your grass. This can damage your lawn and make it more susceptible to disease. Moles and voles are small mammals that tunnel through your lawn, causing damage and making it more difficult for your grass to grow.

For grubs and other insects, use a granule product designed to kill harmful insects invading your lawn.

Fertilize

An important part of any spring lawn care should be fertilizing. Fertilizing your lawn in the spring will help it stay green and healthy all season long. Be sure to use a fertilizer that is specifically designed for lawns in your part of the country. There are different fertilizers for different types of grass and growing conditions. Apply the fertilizer according to the directions on the package.

Leveling

If you have any low spots on your lawn, now is a good time to level them out. While topsoil may seem like a logical choice, sand is actually better for filling in low spots in your lawn because it drains well and doesn't compact. Use a rake to level out the sand, re-seed the area, and water it well.

Overseeding

Overseeding is the process of planting new grass seeds on an existing lawn. This is a good way to thicken up your lawn, improve its appearance, and make it more resistant to disease. Be sure to use a grass seed that is appropriate for your region and type of lawn.

While there are many steps for a happy healthy lawn, spring lawn care is not a difficult process. If you have any questions about spring lawn care in your area, talk to a professional lawn and garden service such as Green Oasis
